The Private Equity industry as we know it today is significantly larger compared to what it used to be 20 years ago. Nowadays pension funds, investment banks and high-net-worth individuals invest their money in private equity funds. The main idea is to use the money in order to acquire private or public companies, develop and improve their business, and then resell it at a considerable profit, given that the typical investment horizon ranges between 5 and 10 years. Private equity investments are risky, very illiquid and investors expect a significantly higher return compared to some of the other asset classes. Private Equity is one of the most desired career paths in the world of Business and Finance. Several years ago very few, if any, of the PE funds were hiring without relevant w...

  • Why the new Infrastructure Bank will give private investors lucrative returns. | Dan Albas, MP

I was on Power and Politics earlier this week talking about the new Infrastructure Bank. In order for the Infrastructure Bank to gain any private sector investors, the bank will need to pay competitive rates of return– these interest rates will of course be higher than the rates that the Government can borrow at so in effect this new Infrastructure Bank could ultimately end up subsidizing private investors who would enjoy lucrative and guaranteed rates of return.

Several years ago very few, if any, of the PE funds were hiring without relevant work experience. Today, it appears that more funds are willing to hire people with less experience. It is not rare to see intern and analyst openings within PE funds. However, if you’ve worked a couple of years in investment banking, consulting, or financial advisory, your chances of being hired increase significantly. Salaries vary based on the firm size and the country that you are located in, but they are generally 10-20% higher than the ones of investment banker analysts and associates with the same number of years of experience. In this lesson, you'll get a quick and easy-to-implement, but still very effective. By http://breakingintowallstreet.com/ "Financial Modeling Training And Career Resources For Aspiring Investment Bankers" You'll also get tips on how to improve your resume / CV walk-through in investment banking, private equity, and other finance interviews. Your resume walk-through is how you answer the "Tell me about yourself" or "Walk me through your resume" or "Why are you here today?" question when you walk into an interview and first introduce yourself. This is IMPORTANT because it's y our first impression, and interviewers often decide your status within the first 5 minutes of the interview. Come across well, and you can answer other questions poorly but still receive a job offer or move onto the next round; come across poorly, and you won't move to the next round no matter how great your Excel skills are. We recommend this outline for your resume walk-through: 1. The Beginning - Where you went to school, where you started out working, your family background, etc. 2. The Spark - What, specifically, made you interested in finance initially? A person? An event? Your parents day trading or running a business? A professor? An internship? 3. Growing Interest - How did you develop this interest via classes, activities, further internships or jobs, and your networking and self-study efforts? 4. The Future / Why You're Here Today - What's your future goal (advising / investing in companies?) and how will working at this firm allow you to contribute TO that firm while also achieving your long-term goals? THE PROBLEM: Often, the last part - the "Future" / "Why You're Here Today" segment is BORING and what you say sounds identical to everyone else's statement. "I want to become a trusted adviser to companies." "I want to invest in companies in XX sector." THE SOLUTION: Link it back to the FIRST PART of your story - either your Beginning or Spark - to make it more memorable and attention-grabbing. It works in movies (see: Inception and The Usual Suspects), and it works in interviews, too! Example 1: You're in a private equity interview, and your Spark is how you helped a private tech company raise funds; you saw additional expansion opportunities via partnerships and other deals, but in investment banking you just advise on one deal and that's it... so you started looking into PE in more detail. Instead of just saying, "I want to combine my interest in tech with my background in finance and invest in tech companies in the future," say: "So I'm here today because of that original situation with the private company that sparked my interest in the industry - I want to get more opportunities like that, where I can help improve businesses over the long-term via partnerships, acquisitions, and operational changes that you only get to implement in private equity. And in the future, I want to be an investor in the tech sector, and your firm is the best place for that because... [Insert the rest of your reasons here]" Example 2: You're in an investment banking interview, and your Spark was working at a non-profit that merged with another non-profit one summer, after which you started taking more finance classes and learning more about the industry. You have a background in public policy, and your long-term plan is to advise in the Project Finance / Public Finance sectors. Instead of just saying that for the last part of your story, you could say: "I want to advise organizations that may not be as ‘savvy’ about finance, like the merged non-profit I was at a few years ago – and become a trusted adviser to those types of public/private organizations. Your firm is the ideal place to do that because of [And insert references to other deals or clients they've advised here]."

From transportation to energy, and everything in between, should the government invest money in as many promising projects as possible? Or would that actually doom many of those ventures to failure? Burt Folsom, historian and professor at Hillsdale College, answers those questions by drawing on the fascinating history of the race to build America's railroads and airplanes. A company going bankrupt is not news. But Solyndra was not just any company. Its biggest “investor” was the federal government which had given it $500 million dollars. That was news. But, really, it shouldn’t have been. If history is any guide, it was quite predictable. The government is a very poor investor. And always has been. There are countless examples, but two should serve our purpose here. After the Civil War, American leaders were anxious to bind the country’s North, South, East, and West regions together with transcontinental railroads. Congress therefore gave massive federal aid to build the Union Pacific, the Central Pacific, and later the Northern Pacific Railroads. But all three of these roads had huge financial problems. The Union Pacific, for example, was mired in financial scandal from its inception, went bankrupt several times, and had to rebuild large sections of track thanks to shoddy construction practices. At that same time, James J. Hill, with no federal aid whatsoever, built a railroad from St. Paul to Seattle -- the Great Northern. How was Hill able to do with private funds what the Union Pacific failed to do with a gift of tens of millions of federal dollars? The starting point is incentives. The Union Pacific was paid by the government for each mile of road it built. It was in the railroad’s interest not to build the road straight. The more miles it took the UP to cross Nebraska, for example, the more money it made. Hill, by contrast, used his own capital. To make a profit, he had to build his Great Northern Railroad sturdy and straight. Hill’s company remained in business for almost a hundred years until 1970 when it merged with other railroads. The original Union Pacific, riddled with corruption and numerous other financial misdeeds, including the wholesale bribery of public officials, went broke within ten years. The story of the airplane is even more stark. By the opening of the twentieth century, the major nations of Europe and America were frantically at work trying to invent a flying machine. The first nation to do so would have a huge military and commercial advantage. In fact, leading American politicians of the day, such as Teddy Roosevelt, President William McKinley, and others argued that building an airplane was a national emergency. There was no time, they argued, to wait for private industry to get the job done. The government needed to pick the best aeronautics expert and give him the money he needed. That expert was Samuel Langley, the president of the prestigious Smithsonian Institution and holder of honorary degrees from Harvard, Yale, Oxford, and Cambridge. Langley was already an accomplished inventor and he had written a highly praised book Experiments in Aerodynamics. Federal officials gave Langley funds for two trial flights. He immediately set to work. His theory was that his plane needed to be thrust into the air from a houseboat on the Potomac River. The big engine on the plane would then propel it through air for several minutes. When his first attempt failed, and the plane splashed into the river, Langley was not deterred. But when his second flight did no better, Langley and the politicians gave up. If Langley, with the full backing of the government, could not solve the problem, people simply assumed that it could not be solved. Indeed, The New York Times wrote that human flight might take a million years to accomplish.
